Ode to Joy: easy piano notes in C major

The right hand opens E E F G | G F E D | C C D E | E D D in this simplified C-major arrangement. Learn that melody first; then add the separate left-hand notes shown in the score.

An eight-measure simplified theme from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, arranged for two piano staves. This is an excerpt, not the complete symphony.

The first phrase, note by note

This guide covers measures 1-4. These are note attacks in score order, not equal-length beats. Use the notation for octaves, rests and note lengths.

What to practice

A five-note melody, repeated phrases, and coordinating a steady left hand with the right-hand rhythm.

  1. Practice the first two measures with your right hand alone. Follow the rise from E to G and return to D one white key at a time.
  2. Add measures 3-4. Watch the dotted rhythm: the letters alone cannot tell you the timing.
  3. Practice the steady left-hand C pattern separately: two C3 half notes per measure. C3 here means the C one octave below middle C. Each lasts two beats.
  4. Put the hands together at a slower tempo. Once the first phrase feels comfortable, compare measures 5-8: the opening returns, but the ending changes.
